The foundation of the East-West Highway, commonly known as Mahendra Highway (महेन्द्र राजमार्ग), was laid by the late King Mahendra Bir Bikram Shah in Gaindakot 1, Nawalparasi.

This project stands as one of the most transformative development initiatives during King Mahendra's reign. It significantly reduced Nepal's reliance on foreign roads for travel, providing a direct route across the Terai region, which could be used year-round. Prior to its construction, people were forced to travel through India to move between different parts of Nepal, creating logistical challenges and hindrances to internal connectivity.

The highway also played a pivotal role in encouraging migration from the mountainous regions to the plains, offering better access to resources, improved infrastructure, and fertile land. This migration was further supported by the malaria eradication campaign, which was also initiated by the king’s leadership. In addition, King Mahendra actively encouraged Nepalis living abroad—such as those in Myanmar, India, and former Indian Gorkha soldiers—to resettle in the plains. This strategic move is widely regarded as a farsighted decision that contributed to the country’s security and long-term development. Many Nepalis who had lived for generations abroad were able to return to their ancestral land, finally finding a place they could call home without the stigma of being foreigners in their host countries.

The road was partially completed around 2027 BS, with most sections featuring two lanes. Although the initial construction was narrower, the land allocated for the highway was notably wide enough to accommodate multiple lanes and even potential railway tracks in the future. Thanks to the wise planning at that time, there was no need to compensate landowners for any land used to widen the road or develop surrounding infrastructure.

It would be remiss of us not to acknowledge the historical significance of this project and the far-reaching decisions made at that time. As we enjoy the benefits provided by Mahendra Highway today, we should remember the foresight that made it all possible.
